As the summer temperatures rise, I’m reminded of the toll that heat can take on both laptops and desktop computers. Today’s systems are more powerful than ever, but with that increased performance comes greater dependence on proper cooling.

Over the past several months, I’ve seen an increasing number of computers come into the shop with severe overheating issues. The latest was a gaming desktop that required all six cooling fans to be replaced because none of them were operating properly. Two of those fans were part of the liquid cooling system, and the radiator was completely clogged with dust and debris. Amazingly, the system survived as long as it did without suffering permanent damage.

The customer had been experiencing frequent system lockups, freezing, and unexpected shutdowns—all classic signs of an overheating computer.

Laptops are no different. If your laptop frequently crashes, becomes unresponsive, the mouse freezes, or it suddenly shuts down, overheating may be the culprit. These warning signs shouldn’t be ignored. Repeated overheating and system crashes can damage critical components such as the processor, graphics chip, motherboard, or storage drive, potentially leading to costly repairs or even making the device unusable.

The good news is that overheating is often preventable. A professional internal cleaning removes dust and debris that restrict airflow, allowing cooling fans and heatsinks to do their job properly.

For smokers, there is an added concern. Nicotine residue coats the internal components, causing dust to stick much more aggressively. This sticky buildup blocks airflow, reduces cooling efficiency, and can significantly shorten your computer’s lifespan.

Don’t wait until your computer overheats and fails. Preventative maintenance is far less expensive than replacing damaged hardware. A professional cleaning can help keep your system running cooler, quieter, and more reliably throughout the summer—and for years to come.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
